The Soundscape - R.Murray Schafer

The Soundscape:

Soundscape is the term that describes the ambient and background sounds to everyday life i.e birds chirping, cars driving, wind blowing etc. As society develops so do these sounds that we hear on a day to day basis. Schafer states even though these sounds are adapting and changing it is necessary that we establish these sounds are present and see them for what they are ugly or beautiful.

This reading in a nut shell stresses the importance of a soundscape and that is why in my project I added a continuing soundscape in the back to maintain a more realistic feel to the scene, so the audience feel they are themselves within the scene. As when we are all on a motorway or in a tunnel we know what to expect to hear. This makes my piece flow better as when there are parts of slight silence there is still a continuing background sound.

Own Sounds:

How to make the sound of the metal hand scraping across the floor:

Overlay sounds e.g.

Key scraping across radiator
Knife scraping on pan
Spatula scraping against pan
Keys across grater
Metal object across metal bed frame
Keys across Spatula

These sounds will create a metallic scraping sound which needs to be achieved to make the scene sound as impactful as it looks.

The microphone I used to record my own audio was the Sennheiser K6 and this was then recorded onto a Marantz PMD. I found this rather easy to use, the only issue I couldn't overcome was the fact the audio would only play out of the right ear. But, when I went to edit the audio I was able to simply play the same audio on the same duo channel using the channel mixer. Therefore, the audio was fine and nothing got ruined.

All sounds I used that weren't mine:
